How to Create a Sensory Corner at Home – Tips from an OT in Malta
By Ema Bartolo ·
As an Occupational Therapist in Malta, one of the most impactful recommendations I give to families is to set up a sensory corner at home. It doesn’t need to be expensive, elaborate, or Instagram-worthy. What matters is that it gives your child a dedicated space where they can regulate their body and emotions — a place to calm down, organise their senses, or get the input they need to feel ready for the day.
Whether your child is sensory-seeking, sensory-avoiding, or somewhere in between, a well-thought-out sensory corner can reduce meltdowns, improve focus, and give your child a healthy coping strategy they can use independently.
What Is a Sensory Corner?
A sensory corner is a small, defined area in your home that is set up with items and tools to help your child manage their sensory needs. Think of it as a “regulation station” — a safe space your child can go to when they feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, understimulated, or simply need a break.
It is not a time-out space. It is the opposite — a supportive environment that teaches your child to recognise their own needs and take positive action.
Choosing the Right Spot
Many homes in Malta are compact, so you don’t need an entire room. A corner of a bedroom, a space under the stairs, or even a section of the living room can work beautifully. Key considerations include:
- Low traffic area: Choose somewhere away from the busiest part of the home
- Reduced visual clutter: Keep the area simple and visually calm
- Controllable lighting: Natural light with the option to dim or soften it is ideal
- Safe boundaries: Use a small tent, curtain, or bookshelf to define the space
What to Include in Your Sensory Corner
The items you choose should be tailored to your child’s unique sensory profile. At WonderKids, we help families identify what their child responds to best. Here are some general categories to consider:
For Calming (Sensory-Avoiding Children)
- Weighted blanket or lap pad: Provides deep pressure input that calms the nervous system
- Noise-cancelling headphones: Reduces auditory overload
- Soft cushions or bean bag: A cosy place to retreat into
- Fidget tools: Tactile items like stress balls, putty, or textured rings
- Visual timer: Helps your child manage how long they need in the space
For Alerting (Sensory-Seeking Children)
- Mini trampoline or wobble board: Vestibular input to help organise the brain
- Resistance bands: Tied to a chair or post for pulling and stretching
- Chewy tubes or safe oral motor tools: For children who seek oral input
- Textured mats or panels: Different surfaces to touch and explore
- Body sock or lycra tunnel: Provides proprioceptive input through resistance
Teaching Your Child to Use the Space
Setting up the corner is only half the work. The other half is teaching your child when and how to use it:
- Introduce it when calm: Show your child the space during a relaxed moment, not during a meltdown
- Model its use: Sit in the space yourself and demonstrate using the tools
- Use visual cues: A simple chart showing “When I feel…” and “I can go to my corner and…” helps younger children
- Avoid forcing it: The corner should always be an invitation, never a punishment
- Rotate items: Keep it fresh by swapping tools every few weeks
Sensory Corners in Maltese Homes
Living in Malta, many families navigate smaller living spaces, warm temperatures, and multi-generational households. A sensory corner can be adapted to fit these realities. During summer, when the heat can add to sensory overload, consider including cooling elements like a damp cloth or a fan. If space is truly limited, a portable sensory kit in a basket can serve the same purpose — your child can take it to any quiet spot in the home.
