Motor skills form the foundation of a child’s ability to explore, play, learn, and care for themselves, and occupational therapy provides effective support when these skills are delayed. At WonderKids in Malta, our paediatric occupational therapists help children develop both gross and fine motor abilities through engaging, evidence-based therapy.
What Are Motor Skills and Why Are They Important?
Motor skills are divided into two categories. Gross motor skills involve the large muscles of the body and include running, jumping, climbing stairs, catching a ball, and maintaining balance. Fine motor skills involve the smaller muscles of the hands and fingers and are needed for writing, drawing, cutting, using cutlery, and managing fastenings on clothing.
Both types of motor skills are essential for daily life. A child who struggles with gross motor skills may avoid playground activities and sports, while a child with fine motor difficulties may struggle with handwriting, art activities, and self-care tasks.
What Causes Motor Skill Difficulties?
Motor skill delays can result from a range of factors including developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia), low muscle tone, sensory processing differences, neurological conditions, or simply limited opportunities for physical play. Some children develop motor skills more slowly than their peers without an identifiable cause.
Regardless of the reason, early identification and intervention give children the best chance of catching up and building confidence.
How We Help at WonderKids
Our occupational therapists conduct thorough motor assessments to identify specific areas of strength and difficulty. We use standardised assessment tools alongside clinical observation to build a detailed picture of your child’s motor abilities.
Therapy is individualised and play-based, targeting the specific skills your child needs to develop:
- Gross motor activities: Obstacle courses, balance challenges, ball skills, and climbing to build strength, coordination, and balance
- Fine motor exercises: Theraputty, bead threading, cutting activities, and construction play to develop hand strength and dexterity
- Motor planning practice: Activities that help children learn to plan, sequence, and execute new motor tasks
- Bilateral coordination: Tasks that require both hands to work together, such as catching, cutting, and tying shoelaces
- Core stability work: Exercises that build the postural foundation needed for controlled, coordinated movement
What to Expect from Therapy
The process begins with an initial assessment at our clinic in Mosta, Malta. We discuss your concerns, assess your child’s motor skills, and develop an individualised therapy plan with specific, measurable goals.
Therapy sessions are 45 minutes long and take place in our well-equipped therapy rooms. We make sessions fun and engaging, using activities that challenge your child at just the right level. We provide home programmes so that practice continues between sessions, and we regularly review progress and adjust goals.
How Can Parents Support Motor Development?
Encourage active outdoor play, limit screen time, provide opportunities for messy play and craft activities, and let children practise self-care tasks even when it takes longer. Our therapists will guide you with specific activities suited to your child’s needs.
