Understanding Visual Perception Difficulties in Children – OT in Malta

By Ema Bartolo ·

Visual perception differs from eyesight — a child with perfect vision may still struggle to interpret what they see. As an occupational therapist in Malta, I frequently encounter students referred for concentration issues when the underlying problem is actually visual perception difficulties: the brain’s capacity to organize and respond to visual information.

What Visual Perception Encompasses

Visual perception involves multiple interconnected abilities:

  • Visual discrimination: Distinguishing differences and similarities between shapes and objects
  • Figure-ground perception: Isolating specific items from cluttered backgrounds
  • Visual memory: Retaining what was viewed
  • Visual sequential memory: Remembering ordered sequences of visual symbols
  • Form constancy: Recognizing shapes despite variations in size, colour, or orientation
  • Visual closure: Identifying objects or text when portions are hidden
  • Spatial relationships: Understanding positional relationships between objects

Recognizing Difficulties

Children with visual perception challenges often appear intelligent conversationally, creating confusion about their academic struggles. Warning signs include:

  • Reversing letters or numbers beyond age seven
  • Copying difficulties from the board
  • Inconsistent handwriting
  • Puzzle avoidance
  • Skipping lines while reading
  • Mathematical alignment problems
  • Organizational challenges

Occupational Therapy Interventions

Assessment using standardized tools identifies specific challenges. Treatment includes:

  • Structured visual activities like puzzles and matching games
  • Handwriting instruction with visual supports
  • Classroom environmental adjustments
  • Integrated motor skill training addressing the connection between visual perception and motor control

Home and School Support

Parents can strengthen skills through jigsaws, block building, sorting activities, memory games, and spot-the-difference tasks. Schools can accommodate students through enlarged worksheets, reduced visual clutter, and highlighted writing lines.
