Paediatric occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need for daily life, school, and play. At WonderKids in Malta, our qualified occupational therapists work with children of all ages to build independence, confidence, and functional abilities through fun, evidence-based approaches.
What Is Occupational Therapy for Children?
Occupational therapy (OT) for children focuses on developing the skills needed for the “occupations” of childhood — playing, learning, self-care, and socialising. A paediatric occupational therapist assesses and treats difficulties with:
- Fine motor skills: Handwriting, cutting, manipulating small objects
- Gross motor skills: Balance, coordination, sports, playground activities
- Sensory processing: How children receive and respond to sensory information
- Self-care: Dressing, eating, toileting, hygiene
- Executive functioning: Organisation, planning, attention, task completion
- Social and emotional skills: Regulation, interaction, coping strategies
Who Benefits from Occupational Therapy?
Children with a wide range of conditions and challenges benefit from OT, including:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- ADHD and attention difficulties
- Developmental Coordination Disorder (dyspraxia)
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Developmental delays
- Learning difficulties
- Anxiety and emotional regulation challenges
- Handwriting difficulties
You do not need a formal diagnosis to access occupational therapy. Many children benefit from OT support for specific skill development.
What Happens in an OT Assessment?
At WonderKids, the assessment process includes:
- Parent interview: Detailed discussion about your child’s development, daily routines, and areas of concern
- Standardised testing: Formal assessments measuring motor skills, sensory processing, visual-motor integration, and other relevant areas
- Clinical observations: Watching your child during structured and free play activities
- Report and recommendations: A comprehensive report with findings, goals, and a recommended therapy plan
Assessments typically take 1-2 sessions depending on your child’s age and needs.
What Does OT Therapy Look Like?
Therapy at WonderKids is play-based and child-led. Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes and take place in our modern, well-equipped therapy rooms. Activities might include:
- Swinging and climbing in our sensory rooms
- Fine motor games and craft activities
- Handwriting practice using multisensory approaches
- Self-care skill practice
- Sensory exploration and regulation activities
We also provide home programmes so parents can support their child’s progress between sessions.
