WonderKids is Malta’s specialist centre for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) therapy, offering Ayres Sensory Integration treatment in purpose-built sensory rooms. Our therapists hold advanced qualifications in sensory integration and provide comprehensive assessment and therapy for children experiencing sensory processing difficulties.
What Is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory Processing Disorder occurs when the brain has difficulty organising and responding to information received through the senses. This can affect a child’s ability to function in daily life, impacting behaviour, learning, social interactions, and emotional well-being.
Children with SPD may experience:
- Over-responsivity: Extreme reactions to sounds, textures, lights, or movement
- Under-responsivity: Seeming unaware of pain, touch, or being spoken to
- Sensory seeking: Craving intense sensory experiences like spinning, crashing, or touching everything
- Sensory-based motor difficulties: Poor coordination, balance, or motor planning related to sensory processing
How Does Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy Help?
Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI) is the gold-standard, evidence-based approach for treating SPD. At WonderKids, our therapy:
- Takes place in our specially designed sensory rooms equipped with swings, climbing equipment, tactile materials, and vestibular apparatus
- Follows the child’s lead while providing “just-right challenges” that help the brain learn to process sensory information more effectively
- Targets the underlying neurological processes rather than just surface behaviours
- Builds adaptive responses that transfer to everyday situations
What to Expect from SPD Assessment and Therapy
Our assessment process includes:
- Detailed parent interview about sensory behaviours across environments
- Standardised assessments including the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT)
- Clinical observations of sensory processing during structured and free play
- Comprehensive report with recommendations
Following assessment, we develop an individualised therapy plan. Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes, with frequency based on your child’s needs. We also provide sensory diet programmes for home and school.
Why WonderKids for Sensory Processing Therapy?
Our therapists Ema Bartolo and Maria Balzan both hold Master’s degrees in Sensory Integration — a specialisation that sets WonderKids apart. Our centre features fully equipped sensory rooms purpose-built for ASI therapy, with equipment rarely found in other practices on the island.
